When Mary Moore began her high school in 1951, her mother told her, "Be sure and take a typing course so when this show business thing doesn't work out, you'll have something to rely on. " Mary responded in typical teenage fashion. From that moment on, "the very last thing I ever thought about doing was taking a typing course," she recalls.

The show business thing worked out, of course. In her career, Mary won many awards. Only recently, when she began to write Growing Up Again, did she regret ignoring her morn," I don't know how to use a computer," she admits.

Unlike her 1995 autobiography, After All, her second book is less about life as an award-winning actress and more about living with diabetes (糖尿病). All the money from the book is intended for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization she serves as international chairman. "I felt there was a need for a book like this," she says. " I didn't want to lecture, but I wanted other diabetics to know that things get better when we're self-controlled and do our part in managing the disease. "

But she hasn't always practiced what she teaches. In her book, she describes that awful day, almost 40 years ago, when she received two pieces of life-changing news. First, she had lost the baby she was carrying, and second, tests showed that she had diabetes. In a childlike act, she left the hospital and treated herself to a box of doughnuts (甜甜圈). Years would pass before she realized she had to grow u p ---again---and take control of her diabetes, not let it control her. Only then did she kick her three-pack-a-day cigarette habit, overcome her addiction to alcohol, and begin to follow a

balanced diet.

Although her disease has affected her eyesight and forced her to the sidelines of the dance floor, she refuses to fall into self-pity. "Everybody on earth can ask, 'why me?' about something or other," she insists. "It doesn't do any good. No one is immune (免疫的) to heartache, pain, and disappointments. Sometimes we can make things better by helping others. I've come to realize the importance of that as I've grown up this second time. I want to speak out and be as helpful as I can be. "

61. Why did Mary feel regretful?

A. She didn't achieve her ambition.

B. She didn't take care of her mother.

C. She didn't complete her high school.

D. She didn't follow her mother's advice.

62, We can know that before 1995 Mary

A. had two books published

B. received many career awards

C. knew how to use a computer

D. supported the JDRF by writing

63. Mary's second book Growing Up Again is mainly about her

A. living with diabetes

B. successful show business

C. service for an organization

D. remembrance of her mother

64. When Mary received the life-changing news, she .

A. lost control of herself

C. Med to get a treatment B. began a balanced diet D. behaved in an adult way

篇二:2015在职GCT英语阅读理解练习及答案(1)

2015在职GCT英语阅读理解练习及答案(1)One silly question I simply cannot tolerate is “How do you feel?” Usually the question is asked of a man in action—a man walking along the street, or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He′ll probably say, “Fine, I ′m all right.” But you have put a bug a his ear-maybe now he is not sure. If you are his good friend, you may have seen something on his face, or in his walk, that he overlooked that morning. It makes him worrying a little. He looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else, “How do you feel?”

Every question has its time and place. It′s perfectly acceptable, for instance, to ask “How do you feel?” if you are visiting a close friend in the hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to take a train or sitting at his desk working, it′s no time to ask him that silly question.

When George Bernard Shaw, the famous British writer of plays was in his eighties, someone asked him, “How do you feel?” Shaw put him in his place. “When you reach my age,” he said, “either you feel all right or you are dead.”

1. According to the writer, greetings, such as “How do you feel?” .

A. show one′s consideration for others

B. are a good way to make friends

A. a friend who is ill

B. a person who has lost a close friend

C. a stranger who looks somewhat worried

D. a man who is working at his desk

3. George Bernard Shaw′s reply in this passage shows his .

A. silliness

B. cleverness

4. “You have put a bug in his ear” means that you have .

2017高考英语阅读理解解析版汇编(35)

社会生活类阅读理解。

Sports account for a growing amount of income made on the sales of commercial time by television companies. Many television companies have used sports to attract viewers from particular sections of the general public, and then they have sold audiences to advertisers.

An attraction of sport programs for the major U. S. media companies is that events are often held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons—the slowest time periods of the week for general television viewing. Sport events are the most popular weekend programs, especially among male viewers who may not watch much television at other times during the week. This means the television networks are able to sell advertising time at relatively high prices during what normally would be dead time for programming.

Media corporations also use sports to attract commercial sponsors that might take their advertising dollars elsewhere if television stations did not report certain sports. The people in the advertising departments of major corporations realize that sports attract male viewers. They also realize that most business travelers are men and that many men make family decisions on the purchases of computers, cars and life insurance.

Golf and tennis are special cases for television programming. These sports attract few viewers, and the ratings (收视率) are unusually low. However, the audience for these sports is attractive to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, including many lawyers and business managers. This is why television reporting of golf and tennis is sponsored by companies selling high-priced cars, business and personal computers, and holiday trips. This is also why the networks continue to carry these programs regardless of low ratings. Advertisers are willing to pay high fees to reach high-income consumers and those managers who make decisions to buy thousands of “company cars” and computers. With such viewers, these programs don't need high ratings to stay on the air.

1. Television sport programs on weekend afternoons ________.

A.result in more sport events

B.get more viewers to play sports

C.make more people interested in television

D.bring more money to the television networks

2. Why would weekend afternoons become dead time without sport programs?

A.Because there would be few viewers.

B.Because the advertisers would be off work.

C.Because television programs would go slowly.

D.Because viewers would pay less for watching television.

3. In many families, men make decisions on ________.

A.holiday trips B.sports viewing

C.television shopping D.expensive purchases

4. The ratings are not important for golf and tennis programs because ________.

A.their advertisers are carmakers

B.their viewers are attracted by sports

C.their advertisers target at rich people

D.their viewers can afford expensive cars

5. What is the passage mainly about?

A.Television ratings are determined by male viewers.

B.Rich viewers contribute most to television companies.

C.Sports are gaining importance in advertising on television.

D.Commercial advertisers are the major sponsors of sport events.

A small piece of fish each day may keep the heart doctor away. That's the finding of a study of Dutch men in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an ounce of salt-water fish per day compared to those who never ate fish.

The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific support to the long held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart.

Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But previous research has shown that the level of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do. There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese, whose daily fish consumption averages more than 3 ounces.

For 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom ate no fish. At the start of the study, average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day, with more men eating lean fish than fatty fish.

During the next two decades, 78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than factors such as age, high blood pressure, or blood cholesterol(胆固醇)levels.

One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap(包装).

On September 11th, 1958, Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying, “I promised you a gift, and here it is. ”What an honor!
