You need some bread and milk. But half an hour later, you leave the supermarket with a trolley(手推车) full of food. What games do supermarkets play to make us spend so much money?

The tricks usually start before you walk in. Outside the supermarket entrance, anybody who walks past can smell warm, fresh bread. That makes us hungry and ready to buy lots of food, not just bread.

Now you’re inside and, of course, a small basket would be fine, but all they have are trolleys. And of course the problem with a trolley is that it looks sad and lonely with just one or two products inside. So we may fill it with something. In fact, supermarket trolleys are actually getting bigger so that we buy more.

Of course, many people shop in supermarkets because they think everything is cheaper than in other shops. So supermarkets offer very cheap prices on some things but then have higher prices for other products. One new trick is to put red stickers on products. Customers usually connect red stickers with lower prices so the red sticker is easy to be noticed, even when there is no reduction! Interestingly, this trick appears to work more with men than with women.

There is a story behind the position of everything in the supermarket. For example, customers often go only to buy milk. So they put it right at the back, forcing you to go past hundreds of shelves full of other products. The position of products on each shelf is also important. The most expensive products are usually at eye-level so you see these immediately. The exception is anything that children might like. These products are on lower shelves so that kids see them.

Apart from what you see and smell in a supermarket, what about what you listen to? In most supermarkets they have soft, slow music. It’s so relaxing that you slow down and spend more time (and money!) in the store. You also move more slowly when the supermarket is busy. Experts suggest it’s better to shop when it’s quieter, on a Monday or a Tuesday for example. And be careful with queues at the checkouts. These are sometimes deliberate(故意), to make you buy something from the checkout shelves while you wait.

So, next time you go into your local supermarket, remember these tricks and see if you can come with just the things you went for.

在实际考试中,影响听力的因素是多方面的。学生在听力中遇到的种种困难包括:生词太多,往往某一个单词没听明白,就变得无所适从;抓不住重点,抓住某一两个词句而见木不见林,最后还是不得要领;有不少同学觉得自己仿佛都听懂了,可是一到问题,就感觉自己什么也不知道。 影响听力的诸多因素大致可归结为:

1. 语言基础知识不扎实成理解困难。如单词、词组、动词的过去式掌握不牢固。没错,学生所掌握的词汇量的大小、词汇的类别直接影响着学生的听力理解。

2. 自身存在语音问题,造成理解障碍。如长期读不准单词发音,特别是发音相近的词:bad—bed,sheep—ship,beat—bit,count—can’t,here—hair,much—march,quite—quiet,kitchen—chicken,mouth—mouse。

3. 语速的变化所引起的一系列问题。

语速较慢,听力材料与学生的语言水平相当,学生的听力一般不会出现问题,但语速趋于正常,即使所听语言材料低于学生的语言水平,相当的学生也会感到吃力。不少孩子在听到一段语言信息后,习惯用中文逐字逐句翻译出来,而不能直接将语言信息转化成一个情景或一幅画,因而影响了反应速度、理解程度和记忆效果。如果我们注重情景,常做一些看图说话的训练,对于克服听英语时母语的干扰,形成使用英语思维的习惯是大有益处的。

听力测试所涉及的日常生活话题有:问候、邀请、看病、约会、购物、问路、打电话、谈论天气、询问时间等,测试内容大致可分为:时间和数码、地点和动向、价格和数量、人物和事件、情景和背景等。

在复习阶段听力训练中,同学们应该对以上提到的试题类型做到心中有数,同时,应该在平时的训练中明白自己的软肋在哪里,并有针对性地采取补救措施。

“听力能力测试有心理、瞬时、信息三个方面的效应,决定听力能力高低的关键在于能否尽快理解所听材料的内在联系,领会其大意,抓住其重点。”听力理解的语言材料有别于阅读材料,语言结构不如书面语言严谨,较接近我们日常生活中的口语表达,有犹豫、停顿、重复、思考、重音、略音、拖长音、被打断、语序颠倒等现象,句子简短,但内涵信息多。同学们回答听力试题时,除了听力涉及内容外,要特别注意说话人的语音、语气、语调等方面包含的信息。

对待听力测试也有一些技巧,注意这些技巧上的问题,可以使得同学们考试时心态更良好,答题更娴熟。听力在考试技巧上要注意以下几个方面:

1、稳定情绪,集中精力。心理素质的好坏直接影响到听力的理解。同学们应有一个良好的精神状态,在听时必须镇定自信、头脑清醒,沉着不乱,全神贯注,凝神谛听,以积极向上的心理准备,尽快进入答题状态。

2、审清题意,预测内容。如果自己对题目了如指掌,答题时就会从容不迫,有的放矢,不会因来不及读题而错过答题。因此,同学们应尽量利用“试卷分发”到“播放试音乐曲和试音材料”之间的时间,及时、迅速地阅读题目(题干和选项),根据题目中所包含的信息来比较推测对话的内容,带着问题去听,有重点地去听。

(1)、考具体事实和信息。如时间、地点、人物、价钱、数量、原因、目的、结果等,有时还要对听到的信息做加工处理,如数字运算、时间顺序、比较筛选、同义转换、因果关系等。

(2)、推测谈话背景,判断人物身份。要求同学们理解对话地点、背景和对话者之间的关系。

(3)、领会弦外之音,理解观点意图。要求同学们不仅能理解所听内容的主旨大意,而且能通过其中的重要细节、具体事实,揣摩、推断说话者的意图、观点和态度等。

3、捕捉信息,快速笔记。听录音时做好笔记,有助于记住所听内容。特别可防止对人名、地名、数字等听过即忘的现象,有时即使听力理解的能力很强,不做笔记也难以记住长段对话或passage中的全部细节,或对需推理、运算的结果来不及做出反应。笔记还可以抓住人物(who)、事件(what)、时间(when)、地点(where)、原因(why)、方式(how)、程度(how often/soon)等信息,同学们可以按自己的方式来记这些内容,可以记关键词或可运用符号记录。尤其是审题阶段或预测确定的那些和听力问题相关的主题词,更要特别留意,加强捕捉这些关键信息。

4、抓住重点,果断答题。答题时切不可因为一个词听不清,就停下来琢磨一阵,这样,等反应过来时,录音的播放已经过了好几句,弄得顾此失彼。同学们应知道听力测试的“时效”性,听力测试不像笔试那样,有较长的时间去思考某一个问题,或者有选择地先易后难,只要录音一开始,考生只能按部就班地跟着录音往下听,千万不可为一个难题冥思苦想,而要果断地放过去,集中精力应付下一题。

5、分析推理,优化信息。测试时,并非所有的听力材料中的每个词、句子都能被自己听懂,这时同学们就要根据上下文或根据信息的前后联系来推理、分析、修正、判断、猜测词义或问题的答案。

说了这么多,那么,学生们需要在哪些方面多加注意才能提高听力理解能力呢?对此我们提出以下建议:

1. 阅读选项,快速抢读试题,积极进行预测,带着问题去听。

选项是听力理解的关键,它可以帮助我们预测将要听到的材料的内容,也可提示所听的重点。因此,在短暂的时间内分析和对比选项的不同之处非常重要。例如:

1) A. On Sunday B. On MondayC. On Saturday

2) A .MaryB. TimC. Tom

3) A. interesting B. difficultC. easy

4) A. to get home earlier

B. to take more exercise

C. to save more money

2. 善于抓住关键词句,重视全文理解

捕捉信息重点是听力测试中的重要一环,不少人听力差的根本原因就是听录音时抓不住重点,只是盲目地逐字逐句地听,这样往往会产生捡了芝麻丢了西瓜的现象。

一般来说,我们可将测试重点归结为以wh疑问句所表示的意义上。通过阅读对比选项,预测短文内容及重点后,着意听出关键词语及结论性语言,而不必追求逐字逐句地听懂和翻译。学会抓住关键词,就会引起对某个情景或情节的回忆,而关键词本身就含着重要的信息。听时重点要放在实词上,注意力要放在与问题相关的信息词上,像well, unfortunately, however, but等起导向作用的词,其后的内容必须留心。听对话时,要多注意答语的内容和语气,绝大部分信息都在答语中,且往往与答题有关;听独白时要重视首句,它常常是对短文内容的概括。

3.善于跳越难点,充分利用重复信息

在练习听力时,一些同学非常紧张,唯恐漏掉一个词。可是同学们要知道我们自身的英语水平、听时的紧张心理经常使我们无法完全听清每一词,这给部分同学造成很大的心理负担,而这种心理又会影响大家以后的听力练习。如此恶性循环常常使我们对听力具有一种恐惧心理。

对听力练习树立一种正确的认识是很必要。听的时候,注意力要紧跟说话人的思路,有些同学往往在碰到听不懂的单词时停下来,想弄清楚这个单词的意思后再往下听,这种方法是不正确的。听到不懂的生词或有听不清的地方是正常的事,在这种情况下,要当机立断,毫不犹豫地大胆跳过去,接着往下听。有的时候,我们可以通过上下文猜测到该单词的大意,因为一般说来,对话中的词句,尤其是重要的词语,往往会以其他形式在对话中重现,我们称之为“多余信息的重现”,我们要克服恐惧心理,培养这种跳越难点,从上下文判断词意的能力。

4. 学会边听边记,防止遗忘

听力测试中,尤其是听短文时,听清楚或是听懂全部内容是比较难的,同时完全准确地记住全部信息也不容易,因此适当记录是有必要的,我经常对学生们讲“好记性还不如烂笔头呢”。这里需强调指出的是听力测试中的“记”应是速记,而不是听写,速记时要使用自己认识的最简便的,最迅速的办法,例如,字母、缩写符号甚至中文或只有自己才能辨认的符号。

听力技巧1:速读选项,预测考点

提炼选项中的重要信息 提醒考生务必先看选项。当录音人开始宣读 Directions 时,考生应充分利用这段时间

速读选项,预测考点,从而做到心中有数。通过先看选项,可以明确题目多方面的信息:

1)题目涉及到的人物、地点、场合等,在非主题题型中,可能暴露该题的主题。考生可以 通过对全部选项的速读建立起一个大概的场景,比如:图书馆、医院病房等,从而联想起与 该

环境有关的词汇,迅速进入状态;

2)当四个选项是同类短语时,考点就在这一细节。这时,考生应充分集中精力,听懂时间 、数字等与选项对应的细节考点;

3)尽管四个选项中只有一个正确答案,其余的三个选项设置也并非和题目毫无关系。利用设定干扰选项所遵循的规律,我们可以大胆地进行猜想。这种猜测其实并不耽误时间,也不怎么消耗脑力,考生反而能够通过猜想事先得到一个对该题的印象。结合四个选项的共同点,我们往往可以得到大量的提示,有时候,甚至可以把答案猜得八九不离十。真正听题的时候,考生可以和录音人给出的信息进行比较,轻易排除错误选项,直达正确答案。

举例如下: 99年6月Section A(9): You will read: A) She is not interested in the

course. B) She doesn’t like the way the professor lectures. C) She’s

having a hard time following the professor’s lectures. D) She’s having

difficulty with the heavy reading assignments.

黑体的部分就是考生在短短5秒内应该看到的信息点。某考生仅根据以上选项推论如下: 选项中不断重复的course,lecture,assignments都提醒我们,这是学生评价课程的一道题目。题中男生会先问感觉如何,女生的回答可能并不是全盘否定,但一定会有抱怨。

进而推想,很可能用一个转折关系的句式,比如but,而事实惊人地吻合。请看Tapescript: M: How do you like

有效地抓住重点,及时做好听题的准备,为挑选答案和提前看题节省了时间。

听力技巧(二)

掌握节奏 合理安排时间

可能没有哪种考试对时间安排的要求比听力考试还要苛刻。“录音不等人”,所以很多考生答题时都很紧张。其实,听力考试每分钟阅读的字数和停顿时间有严格限制:约每分钟140

词,每个问题后有约15秒停顿。这就象是跳舞唱歌,拍子已经固定,我们要做的是跟上节奏,过分的紧张只会造成混乱,直接影响发挥。

节奏要靠听录音来把握。考生可按以下步骤进行关于节奏的自测: 找出一盘带有Directions 的六级听力磁带,从头开始放音。考生在录音人开始阅读

Direct ions时,快速阅读Section A各题选项(有能力的考生可读到Section B),等到Directions 即将读完迅速回到开头第一题,集中精力再浏览一遍第一题的四个选项。这时候应该正好开

始播放考题。这就是听力考试开头应有的节奏。

如果你总是以这种节奏开始,请保持这种节奏继续做题。如果不是,建议你多放几遍录音,掌握好这个节奏。

答题时,考生切勿在某一题上花费过多的时间(一般少于10 秒/ 题),剩余的时间用于阅 读下一题的选项和大胆猜测考点。一旦没有听懂就根据已经掌握的信息迅速猜一个答案,马上进入下一题的节奏。千万不可拖泥带水,否则破坏了节奏,可能造成随后的简单题目失分。答案选定后可放松一口气,然后尽可能多看下一题乃至两题的选项。

请考生铭记: 掌握节奏,按部就班地做好答题准备,就相当于拥有双倍的答题时间!听力技巧(三)

听力是一种Paraphrase考试 Paraphrase 就是运用同类词语的替换或句型的变换解释句或段的意义。

听力考试多数时候是一种paraphrase考试,它往往考的不是考生是否听见,而是考考生是否听懂。把命题中的对话和段落原封不动地照搬到答案里,等着考生把它挑出来,在六级听力考

试中这种题型几乎找不到。绝大多数题目,要求考生把听到的原文进行变换和归纳,对应到 选项中。

如此一来,我们不光得竖起耳朵听,还得开动脑筋想。这就造成有的考生听懂了原文的每个 字,却选不出答案。要避免这种情况,请注意正确答案的固定特征:

[HTH]正确答案可能与原文用词不同,句式不同,但表示同一意思![HTSS]

也就是说,可能原文从正面肯定某一观点,答案从反面否定别的观点。原文可能说“他只有 晚上才有空”,答案说“他白天没有时间”。

与原文有词语重复或相同表达方式的往往被 出题者设置成了起迷惑作用的干扰选项。 平时注意掌握同义词组和表达可以帮你较好地paraphrase

。另外,考生在用听到的录音 与选项对比以确定答案时,不能只靠个别词语的重复轻易下结论,而要从整体上去把握句子 和文章的内容。 请考生铭记:

答案要经过Paraphrase(释义,意译),不能仅以有原文重现作为选择答案的原则。

听力技巧(四)

听懂语调和重音

英语和汉语一样,说话人通过各种各样的语调和重音的变化表达不同的意思。六级听力中,专业的录音人更是力求表演得真实,他们绝不会用平淡的语调表示自己的惊讶,也绝不会把重音放在无关紧要的词上。重读的每一处都具有提示作用。因而,从录音人的表现中就能推测出人物的心理活动、观点和态度。重音和语调是最为重要的线索。

辨认录音人语调中的信息在听力考试中比听懂单个词更重要。例如1997年6月Section A(9): You will hear: M: How

are their talks going on? Have they reached any agreement? W: They only

seem to have agreed to set another date for further talks. Q: What can we

infer from the conversation? You will read: A) The talks haven’t started

yet. B) The talks haven’t achieved much. C) The talks have produced a

general agreement. D) The talks broke down and could go no further.

黑体部分是录音人强调之处,也正是答题的要点。从重读处可知答案为B。这道题只要听懂了以上几处就解决了。考生在训练时,应该有目的地注意重音和语调的变化,体会一下重音和语调给听者的感觉。

请考生铭记: 语调和重音是暴露考点的关键线索,把握重读部分就至少成功了一半。 听力技巧(五) 不怕长段 听清重点

听力的Passages部分经常被视为难点中的难点。但是,作为听力材料的文段绝不可能文学色彩很浓或学术气特别重,绝不该让没有专业背景的你听完了一头雾水,不知所云。有的考生说,要是把听力段落都变成阅读理解出题,就能全答对。这更说明,听力的段落并非难在文字上。

听力长段的选材集中在学校生活、家庭生活、娱乐、历史、地理和科普知识等方面。如果考生以提高听力水平为目的,则平时应多多注意收集这些方面的材料,不必太专业,掌握一些简单语汇,在考试中就能起到提示主题的作用。录音播放时,当脑中反映出了你所熟识的语汇,你必将感觉良好,信心百倍。

当你没有充分的时间准备时,请一定牢记,充分利用 Directions

的时间,集中精力阅读各个选项并提炼要点,至少要得到文段主题的大概范围,不要拖拉,只要看懂大概意思就行。在听题时,要注意逻辑关系,在相关的选项上做好简明的记号可以避免边听边忘。万一出现没有听清的一两处,根据上下文和你已掌握的信息选一个答案,马上看下一题的选项,及时进入待听状态。另外,听力长段的题目设置通常还有以下规律:

(1) 第一题或最后一题最可能是主题题型!因为一般人都喜欢采用先概括后具体或先具体后总结的形式。

(2) 如果题目中有数字题,经常有不止一个选项在文中出现过。请在数字边标记其代表 的意义! (3)

你所听到的反复出现的词或句必与文段中心有密切关系!没听清的话就选你听到最多的!

(4)

(除非是数字题)没有听清某一句通常不会影响选对答案,从别处得到的信息也足够让你做出正确的判断。正确答案之所以为正确答案,是因为用它作答案有说服力,不仅严密,且与文段的多处对应。
