Goal chances came and goal chances went. But two of the world’s highest-ranked teams—with some of football’s highest-paid players—couldn’t get the ball into the net. And they were playing against sides that only just made it to the World Cup.

With two defeats, one draw(平局)and no goals, France collected its newest title since rising to the top of the game four years ago: the worst defending champion in World Cup history.

“I’m very disappointed, it’s the end of a beautiful story,” said a French striker David Trezeguet. “The story began in 1998 and ended today against Denmark.”

France won the 2000 European Championships and was ranked the best team on the planet before the World Cup.

Besides the goalposts and crossbars seeming to be against this unlucky team, France’s game plan has been the same for four years so opponents (competitors) know it by heart.

Senegal, an African team playing in its first World Cup, surprised everyone by beating France in the opening World Cup match before entering the second round successfully.

Uruguay and Denmark followed a similar to stop France, creating a defensive barrier(屏障)and launching many counter-attacks.

Following France, Argentina became the second big-name to take an early plane home from this year’s World Cup.

The South Americans were expected to become world champions for a third time. This was particularly

because of an impressive display when they lost just one of their 18 qualifying matches.

The team’s 1-0 loss to England on June 7 was the beginning of a nightmare for the players. But even after this surprising defeat, they never thought that they would be going home so soon. But a 1-1 draw in Argentina’s final group match against Sweden made the unexpected a reality.

C.The French team was the champions in the last World Cup.

D.In this World Cup, French team’s balls hit the goalposts and crossbars.

The flood followed heavy rains, which filled the coastal plain and dried river beds and caused them to overflow. The flood crest, several feet high, hit the village of Khemis Nagua at midmorning yesterday as farmers from the surrounding area joined town people in an open market place.

The roaring water swept the village’s living places, the market sheds (棚子), shoppers, cattle and farm tools for miles across the plain..

Imagine a boy from a small village in East Africa. He, since a very early age, has been looking after cattle. At twelve years old he knows more about cattle than most of you. However, he has never been to school. Has this boy had any education?

Education is discovering about ourselves and about the people and things around us. All the people who care about us — our parents, brothers, sisters, friends — are our teachers. In fact, we learn something from everyone we meet. We start learning on the day we were born, not on the first day we go to school. Every day we have new experiences, like finding a bird’s nest, discovering a new street in our neighborhood, making friends with someone we didn’t like before. New experiences are even more fun when we share them with other people.

Encouragement from the people around us enables us to explore things as many as possible. As we grow up, we begin to find out what we are capable of doing. You may be good at cooking, or singing or playing football. You find this out by doing these things. Just thinking about cooking doesn’t tell you whether you are good at it.

We learn so much just living from day to day. So why is school important? Of course you can learn some things better at home than at school, like how to do the shopping, and how to help old or disabled people who can’t do everything for themselves. At school, teachers help us to read and write. With their guidance, we begin to see things in different ways.

63. The writer takes the African boy as an example to show that _______.

A. African children are very poor. B. some children are unlucky.

C. there are many kinds of education.D. schools are of great importance.

64. In the opinion of the writer, A. we have to learn from the people around us.B. the school is not important at all.

C. only people who care for us can teach us. D. education takes place everywhere.

65. One can find out what he / she is good at by A. what people encourage him/ her to do.B. the teachings of those he / she meets.

C. thinking about it when growing up. D. trying and practising things.

A. everyone gets education from the day he or she was born.

B. different classes of people receive different kinds of education.

C. the school is absolutely necessary if one wants to understand the world.

D. everyone will find out what he or she is good at.

67. According to the last paragraph, we know that .

A. the school is not so important as our living places.

B. the school enables us to understand the world in other ways.

C. the school teaches us things which are useless at home.

D. the school cannot prepare us for our daily lives.

Compared to high heels, they don't look remotely hazardous. But flip-flop

wearers would do well to think twice before slipping on a pair. The National

Health Service spends £40 million a year treating injuries caused by wearing the

casual footwear. More than 200,000 people end up in hospital every year after

suffering falls or developing long-term problems.

Once worn only at the beach, flip-flops have become the regular summer

footwear of choice for women, with two in five women owning at least one pair.

But experts are warning of the dangers of wearing flip-flops, such as the risk of joint pains. They say flip-flops force people to change the way they walk so that when taking a walk with long steps they put pressure on the outside of their foot, rather than their heel, causing long-term damage. And there is also the risk of serious injury. Frequent complaints include twisted ankles, but some have broken their arms or wrists after falling because their flip-flops caught on uneven ground. Many also suffer aching toes as they constantly wear them.

Mike, a spokesman, warned of the damage done by wearers forced to adapt how they walk. He

said: “They land on the outside and then roll the foot inwards putting all the pressure on the big toe.” This constant rolling puts pressure on the ankle joint causing it to weaken. The lack of support of the flip-flop also causes pain on the inside of the foot and lower leg. And if you're not used to wearing them, they can cause blisters, he added.

Medics say flip-flops cause far more damage as they are worn for longer periods of time. Emma Supple, consultant podiatrist (足科医师) for the MBT, said: “Flip-flops are universally popular. They are easy to put on and easy to wear but women do need to be mindful that wearing on hard flat surfaces can cause considerable foot and leg problems.”She encouraged women to wear sensible shoes to help recover from summertime injuries.

5. What is the text mainly about?

A. The benefits of wearing flip-flops.

B. The dangers of wearing flip-flops.

C. Some advice on how to avoid wearing flip-flops.

D. The advantages and disadvantages of wearing flip-flops.

6. What is the Emma Supple’s attitude on wearing flip-flops according to the text?

A. CautiousB. Doubtful. C. Regretful. D. Positive.

7. The text is most probably taken from_____.

A. A personal diary on feelings B. a magazine on fashion

C. a research paper on scienceD. a newspaper on health

8. What can we infer from the text?

A. Wearing high heels is more dangerous than wearing flip-flops.

Climate change threatens to abandon years of work to handle poverty in developing countries, a report warned today. Strong, urgent action was needed in poor countries to address the impacts of climate change alongside efforts to boost economic development. The report said international aid should not be blind to climate change, ignore measures which help poor countries adapt to its effects, or continue to promote high-carbon development.

Instead governments and aid agencies should put climate change at the forefront of work to handle poverty, to help developing nations deal with its impacts and seize new opportunities as the world shifts to a more low-carbon economy.

The Future Climate for Development study said low-income countries and those developed countries should look for "win-win" opportunities which simultaneously address climate change and issues such as poverty, health and education. For example, investment in renewable energy could enhance energy security in poor countries, while promoting low-carbon transport would reduce pollution and improve health.

The potential consequences could include developing countries questioning Western models of democracy in the face of the impacts of climate change and food and resources shortages, and for currently unacceptable population controls to be brought in as part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. And conflicts over water and scarcecome to dominate international relations, the report said.

Peter Madden, chief executive of Forum for the Future, said "By putting climate change at the forefront of development thinking we will not only help the world's poorest to avoid serious risks, but we can also help them seize new opportunities to create better lives for themselves.

That is why the UK is now working across the globe to help the world's poorest people prepare for the potentially effects of climate change and shift to the clean technologies that are so vital to a stable, successful world for us all.

This report will act as an important tool to help poor countries plan for an uncertain future, and underlines our need to build climate change into everything we do."

9. Which of the following not good to the developing countries?

A. climate change will benefit the developing countries

12. The reason why the UK is now working across the globe is that_____.
