依雅典的司法制度，被告必须亲自在陪审团面前提出答辩。典型的答辩内容不外低声下气恭维陪审以及楚楚可怜贬抑自己。苏格拉底不来这一套。他不卑不亢，开门见山据理驳斥混淆视听和腐化雅典青年的指控。这样的态度，结果不问可知，简直为自己盖棺。在这一段引译，他回绝了原告建议流刑—就是驱逐出境—的好意，指出：不论身在何地，他都办不到处处以自己为念，都没有办法摆脱被人一状告进法庭的困扰。他的罪状似乎是质疑政府当局所认可的行为标准，既然如此，他宁可选择死亡，因为「不加以检讨的人生不值得活」。
