“万紫千红花不谢，冬暖夏凉四时春。”
昆明的气候，冬无严寒，夏无酷热，四季如春，享有“春城”的美誉。7月份，全国大部分地区正是盛夏时令，昆明似乎还春意盎然，那里7月份的平均气温不过20℃左右，比纬度差不多的桂林低8℃。1月份，全国多数地方正是隆冬季节，昆明却带有几丝春意，平均气温将近10℃，在那里飘雪是件稀罕的事。昆明全年平均气温约为15℃。由于气候温和，雨水充沛，所以植物繁茂，全年都有鲜花盛开，有“春城无处不飞花” 的说法。因此，“四季如春”的称号，对昆明来说确是名副其实的。
昆明为什么四季如春呢？
我们知道，地势越高，气温越低。昆明在云贵高原上，高出海平面近2000米，虽然它靠近热带，但它的高度的作用抵消了它的纬度较低的影响，这是它夏季比较凉爽的主要原因。
另一个原因是昆明在我国的西南部，夏季有来自印度洋的西南季风，带来大量的蒸气，经常下雨，云雨减弱了太阳辐射，雨水的蒸发也带走了不少热量，所以地面温度不高。
到了冬季，由于昆明所处的纬度较低（北纬25度），有比较强烈的太阳辐射，而且有来自亚洲大陆西南部的西南暖流，向昆明输送暖气。它在干燥的西南暖流影响下，形成干季，天气晴朗，少阴雨，因此阳光充足，气候温和。
此外，昆明在地势较高的高原上，北部有梁王山、乌蒙山等阻挡着北方南下的冷空气侵入，所以冬季少有严寒的日子。
昆明四季如春，气候宜人，有利于农牧业生产，作物一年两熟，可以种植稻米、茶、棉花等喜欢温暖的农作物。由于那里气温变化较小，对于生产精密机器、仪表也特别适宜。近年来，昆明生产的机床和光学仪器，已驰名全国。

昆明多秋雨，主要受到昆明准静止锋的影响。在云贵高原东北部山地地形使冷锋受阻，减弱为准静止锋。当冷空气势力强，锋面位于昆明以西时，云南东部地区均处在准静止锋以下，气温骤降，天气变阴或有小雨，有了秋天的凉意，所以有“一雨变成秋”的说法。
