除了各个州之外，大学的座右铭也五花八门，在中国大陆流传最广的所谓哈佛大学座右铭（校训）“与柏拉图为友，与亚里士多德为友，与真理为友”，其实并不是哈佛的座右铭，这句话是从拉丁文的“Amicus Plato, sed magis amica veritas”中误传过来的，这句拉丁文的含义是“吾爱柏拉图，吾更爱真理”，这句话也是更为人们熟知的格言“吾爱吾师，吾更爱真理”的出典。真正的哈佛大学座
右铭是“Veritas”，拉丁文，翻译成英文是“Truth”，也就是“真理”的意思。这句座右铭刻印在哈佛的校徽上。
除了对哈佛大学座右铭的误传外，许多中文传媒对加州大学（University of California）座右铭的解释也是不对的。加州大学的座右铭是“Let There Be Light”，这句话出自旧约“创世纪”第一章第三节，上帝创造了天地之后，原本漆黑一团，所以上帝说了一句“Let there be light”，意思是“让光芒普照”。有些中文传媒将这句话翻译成“愿知识之光普照大地”，其实是想当然将“知识”这个词句加了进去，与原意相差很远。北美各地约有近三十个高校用这句话作为座右铭。包括位于西雅图的华盛顿大学（University of Washington）以及加拿大的维多利亚大学（University of Victoria）等。
以下是一些美国著名大学的座右铭：
哥伦比亚大学：“In lumine Tuo videbimus lumen”，拉丁文，翻译成英文为“In Thy light shall we see the light” 这句话乃是引用圣经旧约的“诗篇”，含义为“在上帝的光中我们必见光明”；
约翰?霍普金斯大学：“Veritas vos liberabit” ，拉丁文，翻译成英文为“The truth will set you free”，这句话引自圣经新约的“约翰福音”，含义为“真理使人自由”。这句话也是加州理工学院的座右铭，只不过英文表达稍有不同：“The truth shall make you free”；
麻省理工学院：“Mens et Manus”，拉丁文，翻译成英文为“Mind and hand ”，含义为“思考与行动”；
宾夕法尼亚大学：Leges sine moribus vanae ，拉丁文，翻译成英文为“Laws without morals are in vain ”， 含义为 “立法离不开道德”；
卡内基梅隆大学：“My heart is in the work” 含义为“全心工作”；
密歇根大学：“Artes, Scientia, Veritas”，拉丁文，翻译成英文为 “Arts, knowledge, truth” ，含义为“艺术、科学与真理”；
普林斯顿大学：“Dei sub numine viget” ，拉丁文，翻译成英文为“Under God’s power she flourishes”，含义为 “在上帝的大能下繁荣富强”；
斯坦福大学：“Die Luft der Freiheit weht” ，拉丁文，翻译成英文为“The wind of freedom blows”，含义为“自由之风激荡”；
耶鲁大学：“Lux et veritas”，拉丁文，翻译成英文为 “Light and truth” ，含义为“光明与真理”；
芝加哥大学：“Crescat scientia”，拉丁文，翻译成英文为“Let knowledge grow from more to more; and so be human life eiched”，有人将这句话译成中文“益智厚生”，我觉得言简辞达，十分传神；
康奈尔大学：“I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study”，含义为“让所有人都能在此学到所有的学习方法”。
上述大学座右铭的共同特点是许多来自圣经，而且特别重视真理。不过，我的一个同事却说“真理”太难了，他特别喜欢弗吉尼亚理工大学（Virginia Tech）的座右铭，“Ut Prosim”，这是拉丁文，翻译成英语为“That I May Serve”，含义与“为人民服务”有点相似。
