Over-utilization of Pharmaceuticals

In the area of antibiotics alone, the most prominent problem has been the over-utilization of drugs. The Center for Disease Control, for instance, estimates that 1/3 of the antibiotics taken on an outpatient basis in the United States are unnecessary. Increasing use of antibiotics is linked to the increase of their resistance by bacteria; in the United States, 14,000 people die each year from drug-resistant

infections picked up in hospitals.

In terms of healthcare costs, the rising use of pharmaceuticals has profound consequences. From 1993 to 1998, for instance, annual drug expenditures in the U.S. nearly doubled from $50.6 billion to $93.4 billion, most of the expenses being borne by third-party payers. Total spending on prescription drugs doubled from 1995 to 2000 and tripled from 1990 to 2000, constituting one of the main factors driving up health care expenditures overall.

230 health workers sentenced for commercial bribery

BEIJING -- China has sentenced 230 health workers on charges of commercial bribery and punished 266 others with Party or political disciplines during a nationwide crackdown on health corruption.

A total of 790 cases were investigated by the health, supervision and commercial and industrial authorities during August 2005 and July 2006, which involved 57 million yuan (7.1 million U.S. dollars).

The authorities have cracked 398 cases, 89.9 percent of which involved purchases of drug and medical equipment and materials, according to a report released by the Ministry of Health on Friday.

The people involved in commercial bribery included local health officials, leaders of medical institutions and centers for disease control and prevention.

Most of the money involved was related to public bidding of drug purchases and maintenance contracts for medical facilities, the report said.

The ministry also revealed five serious cases with the longest sentence up to 12.5 years in prison. The punishments should be taken as a warning and alarm by health workers, it said.

China rejects reports of new bird flu strain

China agreed on Friday to share long-sought bird flu virus samples with international health authorities, after rejecting the existence and spread of a new strain of H5N1 bird flu called "Fujian-like virus".

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said 20 virus samples were being sent to the US Center for Disease Control, a WHO collaborating centre, raising hopes of a better understanding of how the H5N1 bird flu virus is changing.

"We are very encouraged by that. They are viruses from 2004 and 2005, and we will make follow-ups for the 2006 samples," Henk Bekedam, the WHO's China representative, told reporters.

The decision comes after China rejected a report published by a paper last week said several scientists had detected a new strain of H5N1 in the southern Chinese province of Fujian last year.

"The data used in the article are erroneous and the research methodology is unscientific. The conclusions of the paper are untenable and contravene the facts," Jia Youling, China's chief veterinary officer, told a news conference.

The paper published in the US Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that identified the "Fujian strain" said it may have started outbreaks in Southeast Asia.

51Talk无忧英语 “平价英语培训”领跑者

"In fact, there is no such thing as a new 'Fujian-like' virus variant at all," Jia said. "It is utterly groundless to assert that the outbreak of bird flu in Southeast Asian countries was caused by avian influenza in China and there would be a new outbreak wave in the world."

Rob Webster, of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, and Guan Yi, from Hong Kong University, said in the paper that the new strain had already spread to Malaysia, Laos and Thailand, and may cause a major outbreak in Asia and Europe. Jia questioned the reliability of the paper's data. Guan claimed that he collected over 50,000 samples from Fujian, Guangdong and four other provinces. But Jia said none of the veterinary authorities in these provinces received applications from him as required by law.

Guan also failed to indicate the location and owners of the fowls he used, against internationally accepted standards, Jia said.

If Guan had bought 50,000 poultry in markets for his research, then he would not have used only 76 blood serum samples to support his study, as blood serum tests are quite simple, Jia added.

The only option left, he said, is that Guan collected his samples from manure gathered in fowl markets.

If this was the case, then his results could not be exact, because manure can be easily mixed with other materials and polluted, Jia said.

The WHO said it is still studying the paper.

Mutations

Chinese scientists also denied the paper's claims that its vaccines were ineffective against new strains, saying they were continually updating vaccines as the virus changed.

"We have developed new vaccines to control those variants," said Chen Hualan, director of China's National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory.

Jia added that China's national bird flu laboratory had been instructed by the Agriculture Ministry to follow any signs of mutation, amid fears the virus could change into a form that can pass easily between people, leading to a potential pandemic. He also criticized the methodology and ethics of Guan Yi, one of the paper's authors.

Jia noted the Fujian-like strain, which Guan said had emerged in March 2005, was actually the same as bird flu viruses found in Hunan in February 2004 in terms of genetic sequencing.

"Guan said he wanted to alert the world with the paper, but why didn't he report the markets with virus-carrying birds to the government if he truly believed in his findings?" Jia asked.

He said there were 10 confirmed poultry outbreaks in seven provinces of China this year, adding 95 percent of domestic birds had been vaccinated.

The WHO has said the Fujian strain has not shown a heightened danger to humans.

Work out with a personal trainer

It was once the case that personal fitness trainers were exclusively for the super rich or celebrities. But as fitness centers have spread throughout China's big and middle-sized cities and the number of personal fitness trainers has increased, getting your own has become a real possibility for the average person.

Shi was once a professional tennis coach. But now, as he works as a personal trainer, most of his time is spent with amateur students.

Miss Zhang is one of his clients. She has already improved after hiring the coach one-on-one for a year.

"At the beginning, I put all my strength on the tennis racket, taking for granted it was the right method. But later I found out that's wrong. To play well, you should relax your body. With the professional help from my personal trainer, I've learned standard movement skills and patterns."

Once considered a luxury, personal fitness trainers are more and more common in Beijing gyms and sports clubs. Most of them are graduates from sport institutes or once professional coaches. And their prices range between 100 and 200 yuan per hour. More than the attractive income, being a personal trainer is quite a demanding job.

Shi says, "As a personal trainer, you should first be good at the sport you're teaching. It's also important that you understand the sport, not to mention, its basic skills and patterns."

Gao Xiaotao is also a personal fitness trainer.

"Knowledge concerning sports and gym workouts is the basic requirement. We should also be equipped with knowledge in sports-related fields like nutrition and medicine."

A survey shows 10 percent of exercisers in Beijing are already coached by personal trainers. But why do these people pay for somebody to tell them to exercise when they can just go and work out by themselves for free?

Exercisers see a lot of practical advantages to having a personal fitness trainer. "It's less effective if you just work out blindly."

"It saves time and it reduces injuries. Before I hired a personal trainer, I was often over exercising, which hurt my health rather than improving it."

Now it's also popular for several friends to hire a personal fitness trainer together, which not only saves money but helps build a friendlier exercising environment as well.

为什么女性比男性长寿

The age-old riddle of why many women live longer than men has been solved. It's their pumping power, British researchers have found.

On average, women live five years longer than men and women over the age of 60

51Talk无忧英语 “平价英语培训”领跑者

are now the fastest-growing section of the British population. The average male heart becomes weaker with age, and by the age of 70 its power to pump blood around the body could have decreased by up to a quarter of its youthful strength.

The research shows that women's longevity is linked to the strength of their hearts. Unlike men, they pump just as strongly at 70 as they do at 20. The power of the male heart falls by 20-25 per cent between 18 and 70 years of age. In stark contrast, over the same period there was no age-related decline in the power of the female heart, meaning that the heart of a healthy 70-year-old woman could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old's. The dramatic difference between the sexes might explain why women live longer. The good news is that men of any age can improve the health of their heart simply by taking more regular exercise.

Good news, coffee lovers

For decades, coffee lovers sipped their favorite beverage under a cloud. Coffee, like cigarettes and greasy food, was thought to be unhealthy stuff.

But, despite the occasional new red flag ?a and the fact that caffeinated coffee does cause real sleeping problems for many people ?a most of the scientific news on coffee these days is dowight sunny.

"Coffee has gotten a bad rap," says Peter Martin, professor of psychiatry at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and head of a research group that has received grants from coffee producers. "In the past, people were mostly interested in demonstrating how bad coffee was. ... Unfortunately, a lot of these negative findings stick with people over time."

Among the ills linked to coffee in the past: pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer and heart disease.

Follow-up studies refuted the cancer links. And the newest, biggest studies show that coffee ?a though it can temporarily raise your heart rate and blood pressure ?a probably does not contribute to heart disease, at least in most people.

"At this point, I wouldn't say coffee is good for your heart, but I would say that it is unlikely to be bad," says Frank Hu, associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Meanwhile, the possible benefits of coffee now include decreased risks of: Parkinson's disease.

Alzheimer's disease.

Suicide.

Liver damage in alcoholics.

Gallstones.

It won't surprise coffee drinkers to hear that the beverage, at least when caffeinated, also has been found to improve mood and memory, increase safe driving in tired drivers and boost endurance in athletes. Some speculate that coffee might aid weight loss, but that has not been proven.

One possible coffee benefit that has excited interest lately is an especially important one: Large studies now suggest that people who drink coffee have a significantly
