Youth
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust. Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder,the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young. When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.
Knowledge and virtue
Knowledge is one thing, virtue is another; good sense is not conscience, refinement is not humility, nor is largeness and justness of view faith. Philosophy, however enlightened, however profound, gives no command
over the passions, no influential motives, no vivifying principles. Liberal Education makes not the Christian, not the Catholic, but the gentleman. It is well to be a gentleman, it is well to have a cultivated intellect, a delicate taste, a candid, equitable, dispassionate mind, a noble and courteous bearing in the conduct of life--these are the connatural qualities of a large knowledge; they are the objects of a University; I am advocating, I shall illustrate and insist upon them; but still, I repeat, they are no guarantee for sanctity or even for conscientiousness, they may attach to the man of the world, to the profligate, to the heartless, pleasant, alas, and attractive as he shows when decked out in them. Taken by themselves, they do but seem to be what they are not; they look like virtue at a distance, but they are detected by close observers, and on the long run; and hence it is that they are popularly accused of pretense and hypocrisy, not, I repeat, from their own fault, but because their professors and their admirers persist in taking them for what they are not, and are officious in arrogating for them a praise to which they have no claim. A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apple he grew. One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him
to take it home and plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home he did not know where to plant it. He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his field, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit. Finally he planted the tree in his wood where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died. Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place."What's the difference?" the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit. If I had planted the tree in one of my field, my neighbors would have come at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit." "Yes," said the friend, "but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932.I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door of
every station-and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced person-"Go out in the sticks and find a small station that'll give you a chance,”she said. I thumbed home to Dixon, Illinois. While them was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father sad Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer. As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked a1oud,"How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?" I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?"Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words: "if you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment" I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I’d gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.

一直以来，尤其是农村学生学习英语，除了英语课、英语辅导在与英语打交道，其它的时候根本没有学习英语的氛围和机会，而每天学习1小时（周末除开）其余23小时将英语臵之子脑后，到次日上英语课时，学生又觉得陌生了，为了每节课使学生能迅速的进入角色回到英语课上，我们老师就设计了每节课的warming-up 即预热学习阶段。
英语课前演讲，每天2人，内容不限，只要用英语，讲个故事、笑话、朗诵一篇短文、几个同学一起表演对话，甚至朗诵几个英语短语或单词均可。每个同学可以结合自己的情况选其中一项课外时准备就可以了。
二、 英语演讲在无形之中还训练了学生的听力，听懂同伴、老师用英语说话。
三、 英语演讲有时为我的新课导入提供了素材。
四、 英语演讲让我有机会表扬、鼓励每一个学生学习英语，也有机会指出其不足，给学生改正的方向。每次学生的演讲结束时，我都会简要的点评，所谓的点评其实就是委婉的指出其不足，放大的表扬优秀闪光的地方，鼓励他们更努力的、更用心的学英语。比如我说：某某同学声音很洪亮甜美，只是某些单词发音不是很准，希望今后多练习；某某同学演讲设计很独特新颖，只是可能准备太仓促，表演不太流畅，希下一次演讲会更好；某某同学本很害羞，从不单独张口说英语，今天居然在全班同学面前一口气背了15个单词，这个同学下一次肯定会给大家带来更精彩的表演，这个学生在全班同学的掌声中高兴的回到了座位上。
五、 英语演讲扩宽了学生学英语的范围，有时候会使课堂有意想不到的精彩。 备半小时或更长的时间，学生此时就处于无意识的自主学习英语了。
其中一次：人物: thief, policeman , shop assident ,customer. 地点：supermarket , bus stop , police station .事情经过：两顾客去超市与服务员对话交流买东西，一小偷在超市偷东西，顾客发现后打电话报警，警察出现后在汽车站抓到了小偷带回警局教育，并让小偷做检查，服务员写感谢信感谢了两位顾客。（其中人物和地点学生用卡片写上相应的单词贴在了相应的地方，其他学生一看一目了然，而整个对话交流过程又是全英语式的，都是初中阶段学过的，学生学以致用了。
另一次：那天我利用晚自习上课，那天刚好班上一学生过生日（上课后我才知道的），而那天进行英语表演的5（其中3个帮忙）个同学，就为这个同学开了一个birthday party ,包括假蛋糕的准备、庆祝、送礼物、吹蜡烛教室关灯、许愿以及整个交流对话过程都是全英语式的。虽然他们的表演占去了上课时间9分中，但我没有打断他们也没有责怪他们耽搁了上课，而是表扬了他们精心的准备，模仿得很像，就像一群外国小孩在为小伙伴过生日一样。 英语课前5分钟演讲，看似占去了一节课45分钟的九分之一，
看似耽搁了上课时间，但是良好的开端等于成功的一半，向45分钟要效益，正式入课前的几分钟是学生精力最旺盛之段，也是期待学习新知最强烈之时，开头设计好了不仅能调动学生学习欲望、激情，而且还能激发动机，引人入胜，达到未成曲调先有情的教学佳境。 二〇一一年四月十一日

交往是一种普遍的社会现象，是人的基本生存方式。人的发展就是在交往中实现的。随
着社会的发展及现代教育的要求，口语表达在人们的工作、生活、学习中起到越来越重要的作用。因此，语文教学中，尤其是低年级语文教学中，口语表达训练就显得尤为必要和尤为重要。
“课前五分钟演讲”是指上本节课内容前的五分钟而不指上课铃之前的五分钟。利用课前五分钟是指导在这五分钟内进行听说能力的有序训练，与阅读、写作结合在一起，培养学生综合性的语文能力，提高学生综合的语文素质。
一、理论依据
2、《语文课程标准》总目标第9条：具有日常口语交际的基本能力，在各种交际活动中，学会倾听、表达和交流。
二、组织方法
上课铃响后，新课开始前由1-2名学生到讲台前说话训练，每天一次，按座位顺序依次轮换。
注意的几点：（1）全体学生不留例外，不因听课而留遗漏。（2）天天进行，节节训练。使学生养成习惯。（3）训练内容及形式随年级升高而加深。
三、形式及顺序
初中阶段有6-8个学期，依据教材进度，学生认知水平及教学实际，我们采取循序渐进的方法，主要从以下内容逐步推进：1、当众说几句话。2、背一首古诗词。3、讲一个成语故事。4、说一句格言或警句，并进行评价。5、叙述近日见闻或复述近期国际国内一条重大新闻。6、评价班内或校内发生的某一现象。7、描述眼前的自然现象。8、谈对社会某一热点问题的看法。9、介绍一件物品。10、自己提观点、列论据。
叙说古今故事。古今中外的神话传说、童话寓言、轶闻趣事，都是讲述的题材。故事每个人从小经常听，也喜欢听。利用这一点，这一阶段主要培养学生课前发言的习惯，锻炼学生的胆量，以便使学生在公共场合发言能做到情节完整、吐词清晰和基本流利。
关注身边事物。每个人的身边会接触许多事物，每天都会发生许多的事情。即便是学校的生活，只要善于观察，有一颗敏感的心，也会觉得身边的生活是丰富多彩的。因此，要多引导学生注意观察自己身边的一事一物，对看到的(包括从书中读到的)、听到的事物进行独立思考，然后在课前把自己的见闻感受表达出来。
探讨热点话题。这是第二阶段的深化和提高，所谓热点话题，是指在社会上影响比较大而大家非常关心的话题。比如申奥成功、中国加入wto、中国足球冲入世界杯、9.11事件、08奥运、抗灾赈灾等，也可以是电视新闻栏目，当然也可以向学生征集他们关心的话题。探讨之前，教师或同学讲述事情的基本事实，或者先让学生观看电视，然后请学生就听到或看到的谈谈自己的看法和观点。
四、指导评价
教师临场指导要及时公正。主要从以下方面选取一二点概括评价：1、内容评价。对内容新颖、突出重点、特点，富有教育意义的演讲，当场表扬。对内容单一肤浅的演讲及时提出修改意见。2、对表情评价。对敢于在大众场合表达自己感情的学生要赞扬；对真情不能畅快流露的学生及时引导。3、表达的评价。对口齿清楚，声音响亮者給予表扬，对腼腆羞涩的学生不能挖苦，应给予恰当的引导。4、对仪表的评价。
五、效果及作用
1、提高了学生的心理素质。面对众人克服自己怯场的心理。
2、培养了学生参与意识，使学生参与到教学活动中，增强了教学的民主性。

2、读与说的结合。学生全神贯注有意识的强记一段话，复述时，把它们从自己的口里吐出来，完成了语言信息的吸引与反馈的全过程。
3、读与写的结合。在进行写作训练时，上课在进行训练前。先让学生面对作文题目，把想好的内容说出来。
七、认识误区及解释
也许一些教师会认为一堂课用五分钟(甚至有时超过五分钟)进行这样的训练浪费了时间，课堂上就不能完成教学任务。
首先，从语文课程的性质来看，语文课具有工具性，也就是说学习语文要为人们的日常交际服务，应具有日常交际工具的功能。而人们的日常交际最主要还是通过口头表达的形式来进行的。其次，从语文教学的目标来看，过去的《教学大纲》明确指出：要培养学生听说读写全面发展的能力。现在的《课程标准》更是对每个学段的口语交际训练作了具体而详细的规定。
著名语文特级教师洪镇涛说：“学习语言，是语文教学的根本。所谓学习语言，主要是通过感受，领悟，积累语言材料(即吸收，其途径是听、读)和运用语言(其途径是说、写)来提高语文能力。”洪老师从语文教学的根本上来论述学习语文的途径，明确指出：学习语言，听说和读写同样重要，甚至听说比读写更重要。因此，我们大可不必为课前五分钟的口语交际训练而担忧，因为，这和课文教学一样也是语文教学的根本任务。

课前5分钟stt（student talking time）活动是在每节课的前5分钟开展的演讲活动。
一、课前5分钟stt活动的意义
任务型教学理念认为：仅靠语言知识的传授（学得）不会导致真正的语言习得，掌握语言的最佳途径是使用英语，学习者通过有意义地使用语言来发展自己的语言系统。一直以来，英语课堂教学很少给学生运用英语的空间和机会，“满堂灌”、“满堂问”的现象严重。笔者作为教师也是经常不敢把课堂放开，不敢活跃课堂，所以总是反复领读同一个单词，逐句地讲解每篇文章，生怕丢掉一个知识点，影响学生的考试成绩。英语课的教学环节通常停留在“新授课—作业/检测—讲解—新授课”的模式上。
中学生有着鲜明的个性、活跃的思维、强烈的自我表现的欲望以及获得他人积极肯定的欲望。

撰写演讲稿并反复练习演讲。在准备过程中，演讲者大量接触和积极使用目的语资料，他们的英语阅读能力就会逐渐提高；在对所获得的信息进行整理、归纳的同时，他们用英语获取信息、处理信息、分析问题和解决问题的能力也得以提升。
2.让演讲者在演讲中体验到成功的快乐
