Ⅰ. Teaching materials:

The textbook is Go for it! (Grade 8 A, People’s Education Press)

B. Function and status

The function of Unit 2 is “talking about problems” and “giving advice”. According to the two topics, tasks of listening, speaking, reading and writing are designed to help the students to use the modals could and should and the structures Why don’t you …? and What should I do? to talk about the problems in real life and give advice.

Ⅱ. Teaching aims (objectives)

A. Knowledge aims:

1. Key words: argue, loud, original, out of style, tutor, upset, adult, problem, sorry, part-time, important, friend, money, home, new, easy, letter, ticket, ball game, surprise, colorful, borrow, write, call someone up, got someone’s house, every night

2. Grammar:

Ⅳ. Teaching procedure:

This unit is planned to be taught in five periods. In the first period, get the students to learn how to use modals should and could to give advice with Audio-lingual method. Then, make them drill and practice in order to enable them to use these patterns. At last, have students do the listening exercises and role play the activities so as to review the modals should and could.

In the second period, use controlled reading and cooperative learning to practice expressing problems and giving advice. The aim is to help students analyze problems, learn to care for others and develop their noble character of helping others.

In the third period, use the task-based approach and controlled reading develop students’ ability of listening, reading and writing to express ideas and give advice with could, should and shouldn’t.

In the fourth period, use elicitation method to help the learners go over the important words in this unit. Develop students’ ability of writing by controlled reading.

At last, students are tested in order to check whether they have mastered the language points in this unit.

In the fifth period, direct the students to read “Maybe you should learn to relax.” by using the task-based method in order to develop their ability of guessing meaning in context and using English dictionary.
